Question

I fell asleep behind the wheel and veered onto the sidewalk and crashed into a street sign (sending it flying..)
A few witnesses were there, including a woman from a nearby store that briefly came out to ask if I was okay and went back in. Thinking it was a normal, frequent thing, I drove off, leaving behind a piece of my car. I'm afraid of what will happen and want to know what to do. Thank you for helping!

Answer

There's nothing normal about it. You're lucky you didn't kill someone. Leaving the scene of an accident is an offense...I don't know how you're going to explain it to your insurance company if you want them to pay your vehicle damage, but it looks like the taxpayer is on the hook for a new sign.
