My mother is in a nursing home/rehab center. She has developed a sore that is open and is now in hospice. It is unknown if she will survive or if her body is shutting down due to the sore.

Yes, it could be a pressure sore due to neglect. Left untreated they can cause bacteremia, which is very serious. Unfortunately, the protocols for turning patients is not always followed. Discreetly take photos and make an appointment to see a medical malpractice attorney. Her medical records will have to be obtained.
