Question

If a client is unsatisfied by the attorney's performance , In NY can a client request the attorney to give copies of the case file legally from the attorney and not fire him yet. Is the attorney legally bound by law to give the copies , what if he doesn't?

Answer

According to the NYSBA 'statement of client's rights', an attorney must comply with "reasonable" requests for information from a client. As per your retainer agreement, your attorney may still have a lien on the file for services rendered, especially if it's a contingent case. Good luck.
