In this case, a young man presented to the Emergency Room with shortness of breath, unexplained bruising, dizziness and other symptoms of the blood disorder Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP), which if left untreated is 90% fatal. At the Emergency Room, despite blood tests showing a marked decrease in platelets and other classic signs of TTP, his condition was not correctly identified, and he was not treated with an immediate blood plasma infusion, which would have reduced the risk of death to approximatly 20%. Unfortunately, the patient died as a result of this error.
